Our art courses cater for a range of abilities – from beginner to professional artists. If you have just started painting, are starting a new hobby or are thinking of developing your established painting practice, our tutors will work with you at your level. We aim to cap the capacity of our Beginner art classes at 10 or 12 so we can guarantee the classes are small and intimate, which allows our students to enjoy individual attention from the tutors. Our Beginner art lessons involve both individual and group work. Our belief that thorough study in drawing is essential to all figurative work is the foundation of our philosophy as an Art school. The class involves drawing the life model in a variety of poses. The Life Drawing classes are a chance for artists to practise their draftmanship and indulge their creativity in a supportive, focussed environment. Guidance and instruction will be provided by the tutors. This programme will develop your skills, regardless of your level of ability. This class provides a valuable opportunity to focus on your drawing in a more social way, though there is also tuition and direction if needed.
Landscape Painting Courses Alfold Crossways
Our Landscape Painting courses in the greater Alfold Crossways area are 2 day workshops led by artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club. Louise’s work and painting style will be introduced to you on this course. The emphasis will be on acquiring the skills of working quickly, freely and dynamically. Weather permitting, students will draw outside, working on simplifying, abstraction and working with pencil and watercolour, before moving onto painting in the studio. While Louise is available during these two days to give advice and one on one tuition, we encourage students to make several paintings. You will be able to look at a few of her sketchbooks and your own sketchbooks will be used as reference and inspiration for your painting. On the second day there will be a group critique of everyone’s work.
Portrait Painting Alfold Crossways
We also offer a 2 day Portrait Painting Masterclass in the greater Alfold Crossways area, led by Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, artist Tim Benson VPROI. The students will be introduced to the artist on this course, as well as his work and the philosophy behind his work. Tim will start the first day with a demonstration, after which you will go on to make small, quick oil sketches, concentrating not on detail but on form, tone and colour. The second day will give students the opportunity to create a large painting, again without adding detail. A thorough discussion of students’ work and their individual choices throughout this process will lead to an identification of how to create interest and tension in the composition. The course finishes with a one on one critique of the work the student has produced.
