Our art courses have been created with the whole range of artists in mind, from beginner to professional.Regardless of whether you are just beginning, having some fun or developing your artistic skills, our tutors will be able to work with you at your level.Our Beginner art classes are small and intimate (we aim to cap the capacity of the classes at 10 or 12) allowing you to receive all the direction you need from your tutor.Both individual and group work is involved in our Beginner art lessons.You will be given the opportunity to share ideas with other students, as well as being given one to one time with your tutor to focus on your own specific needs.

Landscape Painting Courses Barnes

The New School of Art also offers a 2 day Landscape Painting course in the greater Barnes area, presented by artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club.Louise’s work and painting style will be introduced to you on this course.You will concentrate on learning to work dynamically, quickly and freely.If the weather allows, students will be able to draw outside, working on simplifying, abstraction and working with pencil and watercolour before working on painting in the studio.While Louise is available during these two days to give advice and one on one tuition, we encourage students to make several paintings.You will be able to look at a few of her sketchbooks and your own sketchbooks will be used as reference and inspiration for your painting.The second day will provide an opportunity for the group to critique each other’s work.

Portrait Painting Barnes

Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, presents our Portrait Painting Masterclass, a 2 day workshop in the greater Barnes area.The students will be introduced to the artist on this course, as well as his work and the philosophy behind his work.On the first day, after a demonstration by Tim, you will proceed to create small, quick oil sketches which focus more on tone, colour and form than detail.A large painting will be produced by the students on the second day – again, a work without detail.A thorough discussion of students’ work and their individual choices throughout this process will lead to an identification of how to create interest and tension in the composition.The course will conclude with a one on one assessment of the student’s work.
