Beginners Art Classes Battle

Our art courses are designed for a wide range of abilities from beginner to professional artists. If you are looking to develop an existing skill, are starting a new hobby or are completely new to painting, our tutors will be able to support you at your individual level. Our small, intimate Beginner art classes are capped at a maximum of 10 or 12 students so as to allow the students to benefit from all the direction they need from the tutors. Our Beginner art lessons involve not only individual work, but group work as well. You will be able to share ideas with other students and focus on your individual needs with one to one time with your tutor.

Advanced Art Classes Battle

For those professional artists who are looking to gain more experience or depth or concentrate on the art they have already produced, our Advanced art courses are just what you are looking for. All of our tutors are practising artists and so will be able to give technical support to our students as well as provide an insight into the current status of the industry. You are sure to find like-minded artists in the Advanced art class who share your goals – to challenge their skills and knowledge and define and develop their practice. We understand that taking the time to do a course can be tricky, especially if you are a working professional, so we have developed timetables to suit your busy schedule.

Fine Art Courses Battle

Another course offered by the New School of Art is the Fine Art course in the greater Battle area, which offers a broader overview of fine art. By presenting an introduction to fine art practice – including painting and drawing – our team of tutors will assist students in focusing on and developing a critical awareness of their work. This programme is led by working artists, so students can benefit from one to one discussions with professionals, as well as discussions and workshops with their peers. Over the course, students will understand how their course tutor works and so develop their own skills.

Life Drawing Classes Battle

A popular choice are the Life Drawing classes we run in the greater Battle area. We maintain that thorough study in drawing is important to all figurative work and this underlines our beliefs as an Art school. The class involves drawing the life model in a variety of poses. The Life Drawing classes allow artists to explore their creativity and practice their draftmanship in a focused and supportive environment. Tutors will be able to provide instruction and guidance. This programme is guaranteed to improve your skills, regardless of your level of ability. This class not only provides tuition and direction, but it is a good opportunity to focus on drawing in a more social setting.

Landscape Painting Courses Battle

The New School of Art also offers a 2-day Landscape Painting course in the greater Battle area, presented by artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club. On this course you will find out more about Louise’s work and her painting style. The emphasis will be on acquiring the skills of working quickly, freely and dynamically. Weather permitting, students can choose to work outside, working with pencil and watercolour and working on simplification and abstraction before painting in the studio. As Louise will be on hand to give guidance, advice and individual tuition, it is the perfect opportunity for our students to create a number of artworks, and they are encouraged to do so. You will be able to look at a few of her sketchbooks and your own sketchbooks will be used as reference and inspiration for your painting. The second day will give the group the chance to assess everyone’s work.

Portrait Painting Battle

Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, presents our Portrait Painting Masterclass, a 2-day workshop in the greater Battle area. The students will be introduced to the artist on this course, as well as his work and the philosophy behind his work. On the first day, after a demonstration by Tim, you will proceed to create small, quick oil sketches which focus more on tone, colour and form than detail. A large painting will be produced by the students on the second day – again, a work without detail. A thorough discussion of students’ work and their individual choices throughout this process will lead to an identification of how to create interest and tension in the composition. The course finishes with a one on one critique of the work the student has produced.
