For a broader overview of fine art, the New School of Art offers a Fine Art course in the greater Beckley-Furnace area. By presenting an introduction to fine art practice – including painting and drawing – our team of tutors will assist students in focusing on and developing a critical awareness of their work. This programme is led by working artists, so students can benefit from one to one discussions with professionals, as well as discussions and workshops with their peers. On the course students will gain insight into how their course tutor works and at the same time develop their own skills.

Life Drawing Classes Beckley-Furnace

The Life Drawing classes we run in the greater Beckley-Furnace area are a popular choice. We maintain that thorough study in drawing is important to all figurative work and this underlines our beliefs as an Art school. The class involves the life model being drawn in a number of poses. The Life Drawing classes proivde an opportunity for artists to discover their creative side and practise their draftmanship in a focused, supportive environment. Tutors will be able to provide instruction and guidance. No matter what your level of ability is, this programme will develop your skills. This class provides a valuable opportunity to focus on your drawing in a more social way, though there is also tuition and direction if needed.

Landscape Painting Courses Beckley-Furnace

The New School of Art also offers a 2-day Landscape Painting course in the greater Beckley-Furnace area, presented by artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club. This course will introduce you to Louise’s work and painting style. You will concentrate on learning to work dynamically, quickly and freely. Weather permitting, students can choose to work outside, working with pencil and watercolour and working on simplification and abstraction before painting in the studio. As Louise will be on hand to give guidance, advice and individual tuition, it is the perfect opportunity for our students to create a number of artworks, and they are encouraged to do so. You will be given the opportunity to examine some of her sketchbooks and then you will use your own sketchbooks as reference and as a source of ideas for your own painting. The group will assess everyone’s work on the second day.

Portrait Painting Beckley-Furnace

Also on offer is our Portrait Painting Masterclass led by artist Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters – a 2-day course in the greater Beckley-Furnace area. During the course students will be introduced to the artist, his work and the philosophy behind his work. On the first day, Tim will give a demonstration after which you will create small, quick oil sketches focusing more on form, tone and colour than detail. A large painting will be produced by the students on the second day – again, a work without detail. In order to identify ways in which to create interest and tension in the work, students’ work will be discussed and their choices examined throughout this process. The course will conclude with a one on one assessment of the student’s work.
