Our art courses have been created with the whole range of artists in mind, from beginner to professional. If you are new to painting, starting a new hobby or looking to develop an existing painting practice, our tutors will work with you at your current level. We aim to cap the capacity of our Beginner art classes at 10 or 12 so we can guarantee the classes are small and intimate, which allows our students to enjoy individual attention from the tutors. Both individual and group work is involved in our Beginner art lessons. You will be able to share ideas with other students and focus on your individual needs with one to one time with your tutor.

Landscape Painting Courses Buckland
Artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club, presents a 2 day workshop in the greater Buckland area on Landscape Painting. On this course you will be introduced to Louise’s work and her painting style. There will be a focus on learning to work freely, quickly and dynamically. Weather permitting, students can choose to work outside, working with pencil and watercolour and working on simplification and abstraction before painting in the studio. While Louise is available during these two days to give advice and one on one tuition, we encourage students to make several paintings. You will be able to look at a few of her sketchbooks and your own sketchbooks will be used as reference and inspiration for your painting. On the second day everyone’s work will be critiqued by the group.
Portrait Painting Buckland
Also on offer is our Portrait Painting Masterclass led by artist Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters – a 2 day course in the greater Buckland area. During this course, students will become familiar with the artist, his work and the philosophy behind it. The first day will be begun with a demonstration by Tim, and then you will create your own small, quick oil sketches which focus on tone, colour and form more than detail. Students will produce a large painting on the second day, with the added difficulty of not adding detail. Students’ work will be discussed throughout this process and their individual choices will be examined, so as to identify how to create tension and interest in the composition. The course will end with a one on one critique of the student’s work.
