Beginners Art Classes Burlow
Our art courses cater for a range of abilities – from beginner to professional artists. If you are new to painting, starting a new hobby or looking to develop an existing painting practice, our tutors will work with you at your current level. We aim to cap the capacity of our Beginner art classes at 10 or 12 so we can guarantee the classes are small and intimate, which allows our students to enjoy individual attention from the tutors. Both individual and group work is involved in our Beginner art lessons. There will be the opportunity to discuss your ideas with your classmates, while also having one to one time with your tutor to concentrate on your own individual needs.
Advanced Art Classes Burlow
If as a professional artist you are looking to gain more experience, depth or focus on the work you already create, then our Advanced art courses in the greater Burlow area are ideal for you. All of our tutors are practising artists and so will be able to give technical support to our students as well as provide an insight into the current status of the industry. You are sure to find like-minded artists in the Advanced art class who share your goals – to challenge their skills and knowledge and define and develop their practice. We understand that taking the time to do a course can be tricky, especially if you are a working professional, so we have developed timetables to suit your busy schedule.

Life Drawing Classes Burlow
Another class we offer in the greater Burlow area are the Life Drawing classes, which are proving to be a popular choice. The philosophy of our Art school is based on the belief that rigorous study in drawing is essential to all figurative work. In this class, the life model is drawn in a range of different poses. The Life Drawing classes are a chance for artists to explore their creative side and develop their draftmanship in a supportive setting. Tutors will be there to give instruction and guidance. No matter what your level of ability is, this programme will develop your skills. Although there is tuition and direction for all students, this class provides a chance to work on your drawing in a more social environment.
Landscape Painting Courses Burlow
Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club, runs our 2-day Landscape Painting workshops in the greater Burlow area. On this course you will find out more about Louise’s work and her painting style. The focus will be on learning to work freely, quickly and dynamically. Weather permitting, students will draw outside, working on simplifying, abstraction and working with pencil and watercolour, before moving onto painting in the studio. While Louise is available during these two days to give advice and one on one tuition, we encourage students to make several paintings. Students can look at some of Louise’s sketchbooks while their own sketchbooks will be used as reference and for inspiration. The group will assess everyone’s work on the second day.
Portrait Painting Burlow
Also on offer is our Portrait Painting Masterclass led by artist Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters – a 2-day course in the greater Burlow area. The students will be introduced to the artist on this course, as well as his work and the philosophy behind his work. Tim will start the first day with a demonstration, after which you will go on to make small, quick oil sketches, concentrating not on detail but on form, tone and colour. On the second day students will produce a large painting, again resisting the urge to add detail. In order to identify ways in which to create interest and tension in the work, students’ work will be discussed and their choices examined throughout this process. The course will conclude with a one on one assessment of the student’s work.
