Our art courses cater for a range of abilities – from beginner to professional artists. Our small, intimate Beginner art classes are capped at a maximum of 10 or 12 students so as to allow the students to benefit from all the direction they need from the tutors. Our Beginner art lessons involve both individual and group work. You will be given the chance to both to discuss your specific needs one on one with your tutor and to share ideas with other students.

Advanced Art Classes Cliff-End

If as a professional artist you are looking to gain more experience, depth or focus on the work you already create, then our Advanced art courses in the greater Cliff-End area are ideal for you. Our team of tutors are practising artists and will be available to provide an insight into the current industry and provide technical support to the students. In the Advanced art class you will be surrounded by like-minded artists who wish to define and develop their own practice and challenge their skills and knowledge. Taking an art course shouldn’t be at the expense of your working life and other responsibilities, so our timetables have been designed especially to fit into your busy schedule.

Fine Art Courses Cliff-End

For a broader overview of fine art, the New School of Art offers a Fine Art course in the greater Cliff-End area. The tutors provide an introduction to fine art practice, including drawing and painting, to assist students in focusing and critically reflecting on their work. As it is led by professional artists, this programme gives students the opportunity of benefitting from class discussions, workshops and one to one tutorials. On the course students will gain insight into how their course tutor works and at the same time develop their own skills.

Life Drawing Classes Cliff-End

The Life Drawing classes we run in the greater Cliff-End area are a popular choice. Our belief that thorough study in drawing is essential to all figurative work is the foundation of our philosophy as an Art school. The class involves the life model being drawn in a number of poses. The Life Drawing classes offer an opportunity for artists to explore their creativity and practise their draftsmanship in a focused but supportive environment. Tutors will be on hand to provide guidance and instruction. This programme will improve your skills, no matter your level of ability. Though there is tuition and direction, this class is a great opportunity to work on your drawing in a more social environment.

Landscape Painting Courses Cliff-End

Our Landscape Painting courses in the greater Cliff-End area are 2-day workshops led by artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club. On this course you will find out more about Louise’s work and her painting style. There will be a focus on learning to work freely, quickly and dynamically. Weather permitting, students will draw outside, working on simplifying, abstraction and working with pencil and watercolour, before moving onto painting in the studio. As Louise will be on hand to give guidance, advice and individual tuition, it is the perfect opportunity for our students to create a number of artworks, and they are encouraged to do so. Some of her sketchbooks will be available to look at and your own sketchbooks will be used as reference and inspiration to inform your painting. The group will assess everyone’s work on the second day.

Portrait Painting Cliff-End

Another course on offer is our Portrait Painting Masterclass, which is a 2-day course in the greater Cliff-End area led by Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. This course will introduce students to the artist as they get to know his work and the philosophy behind it. On the first day, Tim will give a demonstration after which you will create small, quick oil sketches focusing more on form, tone and colour than detail. On the second day students will create a large painting, again without adding detail. In order to identify ways in which to create interest and tension in the work, students’ work will be discussed and their choices examined throughout this process. The course will conclude with a one on one assessment of the student’s work.
