Our art courses have been designed with artists of all levels in mind, from beginner to professional. If you have just started painting, are starting a new hobby or are thinking of developing your established painting practice, our tutors will work with you at your level. Our Beginner art classes are intentionally kept small and intimate by aiming to cap the class sizes at 10 or 12 to allow you to receive all the direction you need from your tutor. Our Beginner art lessons combine individual projects and group projects. You will be given the chance to both to discuss your specific needs one on one with your tutor and to share ideas with other students.

Landscape Painting Courses Crockerhill

Artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club, presents a 2-day workshop in the greater Crockerhill area on Landscape Painting. This course will show you Louise’s work and painting style. There will be an emphasis on understanding how to work quickly, dynamically and freely. Provided there is good weather, students can draw outdoors as they work with pencil and watercolour, focusing on simplification and abstraction before they move indoors and paint in the studio. While Louise is available during these two days to give advice and one on one tuition, we encourage students to make several paintings. A number of her sketchbooks will be there for your perusal while your own sketchbooks will be utilized as reference and ideas for your painting. The group will assess everyone’s work on the second day.

Portrait Painting Crockerhill

We also offer our Portrait Painting Masterclass in the greater Crockerhill area, a 2-day course led by artist Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. During this course, students will become familiar with the artist, his work and the philosophy behind it. The first day will be begun with a demonstration by Tim, and then you will create your own small, quick oil sketches which focus on tone, colour and form more than detail. Students will produce a large painting on the second day, with the added difficulty of not adding detail. Students’ work will be discussed throughout this process and their individual choices will be examined, so as to identify how to create tension and interest in the composition. The student’s work will be assessed on a one to one basis at the end of the course.
