Beginners Art Classes Custom House

Our art courses have been designed with artists of all levels in mind, from beginner to professional. If you have just started painting, are starting a new hobby or are thinking of developing your established painting practice, our tutors will work with you at your level. Our small, intimate Beginner art classes are capped at a maximum of 10 or 12 students so as to allow the students to benefit from all the direction they need from the tutors. Our Beginner art lessons involve both individual and group work. You will be given the chance to both to discuss your specific needs one on one with your tutor and to share ideas with other students.

Advanced Art Classes Custom House

If as a professional artist you are looking to gain more experience, depth or focus on the work you already create, then our Advanced art courses in the greater Custom House area are ideal for you. Landscape Painting Courses Custom House

The New School of Art also offers a 2 day Landscape Painting course in the greater Custom House area, presented by artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club. This course will introduce you to Louise’s work and painting style. You will concentrate on learning to work dynamically, quickly and freely. If the weather permits, working with pencil and watercolour and working on simplification and abstraction can be done outside, and the painting can be done in the studio. Students will be encouraged to make several paintings over both days and Louise will be on hand to provide advice and individual tuition.Some of her sketchbooks will be available to look at and your own sketchbooks will be used as reference and inspiration to inform your painting. The second day will provide an opportunity for the group to critique each other’s work.

Portrait Painting Custom House

Also on offer is our Portrait Painting Masterclass led by artist Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters – a 2 day course in the greater Custom House area. On this course, students will get to know the artist and his work, as well as the philosophy behind his work. Tim will start the first day with a demonstration, after which you will go on to make small, quick oil sketches, concentrating not on detail but on form, tone and colour.On the second day students will create a large painting, again without adding detail. Students’ work and the choices they made during its creation will be discussed and analysed during this process to discover how to create tension and interest in the composition. The student’s work will be assessed on a one to one basis at the end of the course.
