Landscape Painting Courses Derry Downs

The New School of Art also offers a 2 day Landscape Painting course in the greater Derry Downs area, presented by artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club. On this course you will be introduced to Louise’s work and her painting style. There will be an emphasis on understanding how to work quickly, dynamically and freely. Weather permitting, students can choose to work outside, working with pencil and watercolour and working on simplification and abstraction before painting in the studio. While Louise is available during these two days to give advice and one on one tuition, we encourage students to make several paintings.Students can look at some of Louise’s sketchbooks while their own sketchbooks will be used as reference and for inspiration. The group will assess everyone’s work on the second day.

Portrait Painting Derry Downs

Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, presents our Portrait Painting Masterclass, a 2 day workshop in the greater Derry Downs area. On this course, students will get to know the artist and his work, as well as the philosophy behind his work. On the first day, Tim will give a demonstration after which you will create small, quick oil sketches focusing more on form, tone and colour than detail.Students will produce a large painting on the second day, with the added difficulty of not adding detail. Students’ work will be discussed throughout this process and their individual choices will be examined, so as to identify how to create tension and interest in the composition. The student’s work will be assessed on a one to one basis at the end of the course.
