Beginners Art Classes Great-Common

Our art courses cater for a range of abilities – from beginner to professional artists. Whether you are just starting to paint, if you are thinking of taking up art as a hobby or if you want to improve your existing skills, our team of tutors will focus specifically on your needs. Our small, intimate Beginner art classes are capped at a maximum of 10 or 12 students so as to allow the students to benefit from all the direction they need from the tutors. Our Beginner art lessons involve not only individual work, but group work as well. Individual one to one time with your tutor will let you focus on your specific needs while you will also be given the opportunity to collaborate with other students.

Advanced Art Classes Great-Common

Professional artists wanting to gain more experience or depth or focus on the work they already create will find our Advanced art courses in the greater Great-Common area ideal. Our team of tutors are practising artists and will be available to provide an insight into the current industry and provide technical support to the students. In the Advanced art class you will be surrounded by like-minded artists who wish to define and develop their own practice and challenge their skills and knowledge. Taking an art course shouldn’t be at the expense of your working life and other responsibilities, so our timetables have been designed especially to fit into your busy schedule.

Fine Art Courses Great-Common

For a more general overview of fine art, the New School of Art offers a Fine Art course in the greater Great-Common area. The tutors will help students focus and critically reflect on their work and painting by providing an introduction to fine art practice, including drawing and painting. Taught by professional artists, this programme allows students to benefit from class discussions, workshops and one to one tutorials. During the course, students will develop their skills and gain insight into the way their course tutor works.

Life Drawing Classes Great-Common

We also offer Life Drawing classes in the greater Great-Common area, which are very popular. The philosophy of our Art school is based on the belief that rigorous study in drawing is essential to all figurative work. The class entails drawing the life model in a range of different poses. The Life Drawing classes allow artists to explore their creativity and practice their draftmanship in a focused and supportive environment. Tutors will be there to give instruction and guidance. No matter what your level of ability is, this programme will develop your skills. Whether you are looking for tuition and direction, or a chance to work on your drawing in a more social setting, this class will be able to provide that for you.

Landscape Painting Courses Great-Common

Artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club, presents a 2-day workshop in the greater Great-Common area on Landscape Painting. This course will show you Louise’s work and painting style. There will be an emphasis on understanding how to work quickly, dynamically and freely. If the weather permits, working with pencil and watercolour and working on simplification and abstraction can be done outside, and the painting can be done in the studio. While Louise is available during these two days to give advice and one on one tuition, we encourage students to make several paintings. You will be given the opportunity to examine some of her sketchbooks and then you will use your own sketchbooks as reference and as a source of ideas for your own painting. On the second day there will be a group critique of everyone’s work.

Portrait Painting Great-Common

We also offer a 2-day Portrait Painting Masterclass in the greater Great-Common area, led by Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, artist Tim Benson VPROI. The students will be introduced to the artist on this course, as well as his work and the philosophy behind his work. On the first day, Tim will give a demonstration after which you will create small, quick oil sketches focusing more on form, tone and colour than detail. On the second day students will produce a large painting, again resisting the urge to add detail. A thorough discussion of students’ work and their individual choices throughout this process will lead to an identification of how to create interest and tension in the composition. The course will end with a one on one critique of the student’s work.
