The New School of Art presents courses led by well-established, highly regarded art historians and artists who will support and guide you through the course of your choice.
Beginners Art Classes Hadlow-Down
Whether you are a beginner or a professional artist, we have an art course designed just for you. If you are new to painting, starting a new hobby or looking to develop an existing painting practice, our tutors will work with you at your current level. Our Beginner art classes are intentionally kept small and intimate by aiming to cap the class sizes at 10 or 12 to allow you to receive all the direction you need from your tutor. Our Beginner art lessons combine individual projects and group projects. You will be given the opportunity to share ideas with other students, as well as being given one to one time with your tutor to focus on your own specific needs.
Advanced Art Classes Hadlow-Down
Our Advanced art courses in the greater Hadlow-Down area are perfect for those professional artists who are looking to gain more depth or experience or focus on the work they already create. As practising artists, all of our tutors can give technical support and provide insight into the industry as it stands at the moment. You are sure to find like-minded artists in the Advanced art class who share your goals – to challenge their skills and knowledge and define and develop their practice. We realise that as working professionals it can be hard to juggle your responsibilities and taking part in a course, so we have timetables which can accommodate your busy schedule.
Fine Art Courses Hadlow-Down
If you are interested in a more general overview of Fine Art, the New School of Art offers a Fine Art course in the greater Hadlow-Down area. The tutors will help students focus and critically reflect on their work and painting by providing an introduction to fine art practice, including drawing and painting. This programme is taught by professional artists allowing students to be involved in class workshops and discussions, as well as one to one tutorials. Over the course, students will understand how their course tutor works and so develop their own skills.
Life Drawing Classes Hadlow-Down
We also offer Life Drawing classes in the greater Hadlow-Down area, which are very popular. We believe rigorous study in drawing is essential to all figurative work, and underpins our philosophy as an Art school. Taking part in the class means drawing the life model in a variety of poses. The Life Drawing classes offer an opportunity for artists to explore their creativity and practise their draftsmanship in a focused but supportive environment. Tutors will be able to provide instruction and guidance. This programme will develop your skills, regardless of your level of ability. Whether you are looking for tuition and direction, or a chance to work on your drawing in a more social setting, this class will be able to provide that for you.
Landscape Painting Courses Hadlow-Down
Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club, runs our 2-day Landscape Painting workshops in the greater Hadlow-Down area. Louise’s work and painting style will be introduced to you on this course. There will be an emphasis on understanding how to work quickly, dynamically and freely. If the weather allows, students will be able to draw outside, working on simplifying, abstraction and working with pencil and watercolour before working on painting in the studio. Students are free to create several paintings over the two days while Louise is on hand to provide advice and individual attention. You will be given the opportunity to examine some of her sketchbooks and then you will use your own sketchbooks as reference and as a source of ideas for your own painting. On the second day everyone’s work will be critiqued by the group.
Portrait Painting Hadlow-Down
Also on offer is our Portrait Painting Masterclass led by artist Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters – a 2-day course in the greater Hadlow-Down area. During this course, students will become familiar with the artist, his work and the philosophy behind it. On the first day, Tim will give a demonstration after which you will create small, quick oil sketches focusing more on form, tone and colour than detail. Students will produce a large painting on the second day, with the added difficulty of not adding detail. Throughout this process, students’ work will be discussed and their individual choices will be scrutinized to identify how to create tension and interest in the composition. The student’s work will be assessed on a one to one basis at the end of the course.
