All of our tutors are practising artists and will be able to give you technical support and provide an insight into the industry as it stands right now. On an Advanced art course you are bound to find yourself in a class of like-minded artists aiming to develop and define their work and challenge their skills and expand their knowledge. For the duration of the course, students will grow their skills and gain insight into how their course tutor works.

Life Drawing Classes High-Hurstwood

A popular choice are the Life Drawing classes we run in the greater High-Hurstwood area. We believe rigorous instruction in drawing is vital for all figurative work and this belief underlies our philosophy as an Art school. The class involves the life model being drawn in a number of poses. The Life Drawing classes offer an opportunity for artists to explore their creativity and practise their draftsmanship in a focused but supportive environment. Guidance and instruction will be provided by the tutors. No matter what your level of ability is, this programme will develop your skills. Although there is tuition and direction for all students, this class provides a chance to work on your drawing in a more social environment.

Landscape Painting Courses High-Hurstwood

Our Landscape Painting courses in the greater High-Hurstwood area are 2-day workshops led by artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club. On this course you will be introduced to Louise’s work and her painting style. The focus will be on learning to work freely, quickly and dynamically. Provided there is good weather, students can draw outdoors as they work with pencil and watercolour, focusing on simplification and abstraction before they move indoors and paint in the studio. Students will be encouraged to make several paintings over both days and Louise will be on hand to provide advice and individual tuition. Some of her sketchbooks will be available to look at and your own sketchbooks will be used as reference and inspiration to inform your painting. The second day will give the group the chance to assess everyone’s work.

Portrait Painting High-Hurstwood

We also offer our Portrait Painting Masterclass in the greater High-Hurstwood area, a 2-day course led by artist Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. The students will be introduced to the artist on this course, as well as his work and the philosophy behind his work. On the first day, after a demonstration by Tim, you will proceed to create small, quick oil sketches which focus more on tone, colour and form than detail. A large painting will be produced by the students on the second day – again, a work without detail. Throughout this process, students’ work will be discussed and their individual choices will be scrutinized to identify how to create tension and interest in the composition. The course will conclude with a one on one assessment of the student’s work.
