If you are looking to develop an existing skill, are starting a new hobby or are completely new to painting, our tutors will be able to support you at your individual level. Our Beginner art classes are intentionally kept small and intimate by aiming to cap the class sizes at 10 or 12 to allow you to receive all the direction you need from your tutor. Both individual and group work is involved in our Beginner art lessons. There will be the opportunity to discuss your ideas with your classmates, while also having one to one time with your tutor to concentrate on your own individual needs.

Landscape Painting Courses Saddlescombe

Artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club, presents a 2-day workshop in the greater Saddlescombe area on Landscape Painting. On this course you will find out more about Louise’s work and her painting style. There will be an emphasis on understanding how to work quickly, dynamically and freely. Weather permitting, students will draw outside, working on simplifying, abstraction and working with pencil and watercolour, before moving onto painting in the studio. These two days provide the perfect opportunity for students to create a few paintings, as Louise will be available to give guidance and individual tuition. Some of her sketchbooks will be available to look at and your own sketchbooks will be used as reference and inspiration to inform your painting. On the second day there will be a group critique of everyone’s work.

Portrait Painting Saddlescombe

We also offer our Portrait Painting Masterclass in the greater Saddlescombe area, a 2-day course led by artist Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. On this course, students will get to know the artist and his work, as well as the philosophy behind his work. Tim will start the first day with a demonstration, after which you will go on to make small, quick oil sketches, concentrating not on detail but on form, tone and colour. On the second day students will create a large painting, again without adding detail. A thorough discussion of students’ work and their individual choices throughout this process will lead to an identification of how to create interest and tension in the composition. The student’s work will be assessed on a one to one basis at the end of the course.
