Art Courses Smock-Alley
Smock-Alley is most certainly an inspiring and diverse centre for the Arts. Many established artists call it home, while it is also the place to come to for emerging and aspiring artists. When considering taking an art course, Smock-Alley is the natural choice. The New School of Art presents courses led by well-established, highly regarded art historians and artists who will support and guide you through the course of your choice.
Beginners Art Classes Smock-Alley
Our art courses cater for a range of abilities – from beginner to professional artists. Regardless of whether you are just beginning, having some fun or developing your artistic skills, our tutors will be able to work with you at your level. Our small, intimate Beginner art classes are capped at a maximum of 10 or 12 students so as to allow the students to benefit from all the direction they need from the tutors. Both individual and group work is involved in our Beginner art lessons. There will be the opportunity to discuss your ideas with your classmates, while also having one to one time with your tutor to concentrate on your own individual needs.
Advanced Art Classes Smock-Alley
If as a professional artist you are looking to gain more experience, depth or focus on the work you already create, then our Advanced art courses in the greater Smock-Alley area are ideal for you. Our team of tutors are practising artists and will be available to provide an insight into the current industry and provide technical support to the students. You are sure to find like-minded artists in the Advanced art class who share your goals – to challenge their skills and knowledge and define and develop their practice. As working professionals, we understand that you have responsibilities outside the studio so finding the time to take part in a course may not be easy, which is why we have created timetables which can fit around your busy schedule.
Fine Art Courses Smock-Alley
Another course offered by the New School of Art is the Fine Art course in the greater Smock-Alley area, which offers a broader overview of fine art. By providing an introduction to fine art practice – including drawing and painting– the tutors will help students focus and critically reflect upon their work and painting. This programme is led by working artists, so students can benefit from one to one discussions with professionals, as well as discussions and workshops with their peers. During the course, students will be able to develop their skills and understand how their course tutor works.
Life Drawing Classes Smock-Alley
Another class we offer in the greater Smock-Alley area are the Life Drawing classes, which are proving to be a popular choice. We believe rigorous instruction in drawing is vital for all figurative work and this belief underlies our philosophy as an Art school. The class involves the life model being drawn in a number of poses. The Life Drawing classes offer an opportunity for artists to explore their creativity and practise their draftsmanship in a focused but supportive environment. Tutors will be there to give instruction and guidance. This programme will improve your skills, no matter your level of ability. Whether you are looking for tuition and direction, or a chance to work on your drawing in a more social setting, this class will be able to provide that for you.
Landscape Painting Courses Smock-Alley
Our Landscape Painting courses in the greater Smock-Alley area are 2-day workshops led by artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club. Louise’s work and painting style will be introduced to you on this course. You will concentrate on learning to work dynamically, quickly and freely. If the weather permits, working with pencil and watercolour and working on simplification and abstraction can be done outside, and the painting can be done in the studio. While Louise is available during these two days to give advice and one on one tuition, we encourage students to make several paintings. You will be able to look at a few of her sketchbooks and your own sketchbooks will be used as reference and inspiration for your painting. The group will assess everyone’s work on the second day.
Portrait Painting Smock-Alley
We also offer a 2-day Portrait Painting Masterclass in the greater Smock-Alley area, led by Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, artist Tim Benson VPROI. On this course, students will get to know the artist and his work, as well as the philosophy behind his work. Tim will start the first day with a demonstration, after which you will go on to make small, quick oil sketches, concentrating not on detail but on form, tone and colour. On the second day students will create a large painting, again without adding detail. In order to identify ways in which to create interest and tension in the work, students’ work will be discussed and their choices examined throughout this process. The course will end with a one on one critique of the student’s work.
