Our Beginner art classes are intentionally kept small and intimate by aiming to cap the class sizes at 10 or 12 to allow you to receive all the direction you need from your tutor. Both individual and group work is involved in our Beginner art lessons. Individual one to one time with your tutor will let you focus on your specific needs while you will also be given the opportunity to collaborate with other students.

Our Advanced art courses in the greater St Johns area are ideal for professional artists who are looking for more experience, depth or focus on the work they already create. All of our tutors are practising artists and so will be able to give technical support to our students as well as provide an insight into the current status of the industry. Fine Art Courses St Johns

Another course offered by the New School of Art is the Fine Art course in the greater St Johns area, which offers a broader overview of fine art. By presenting an introduction to fine art practice – including painting and drawing – our team of tutors will assist students in focusing on and developing a critical awareness of their work. The programme is taught by professional artists, which allows students to benefit from one to one tutorials as well as be involved in class workshops and discussions. For the duration of the course, students will grow their skills and gain insight into how their course tutor works.

Life Drawing Classes St Johns

Our Life Drawing classes which we offer in the greater St Johns area are proving to be a popular choice. The philosophy of our Art school is based on the belief that rigorous study in drawing is essential to all figurative work. In this class, the life model is drawn in a range of different poses. The Life Drawing classes proivde an opportunity for artists to discover their creative side and practise their draftmanship in a focused, supportive environment. Tutors will be available to give guidance and provide instruction. This programme will improve your skills, no matter your level of ability. Whether you are looking for tuition and direction, or a chance to work on your drawing in a more social setting, this class will be able to provide that for you.

Landscape Painting Courses St Johns

Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club, runs our 2 day Landscape Painting workshops in the greater St Johns area. This course will show you Louise’s work and painting style. The emphasis will be on acquiring the skills of working quickly, freely and dynamically. Weather permitting, students will draw outside, working on simplifying, abstraction and working with pencil and watercolour, before moving onto painting in the studio. These two days provide the perfect opportunity for students to create a few paintings, as Louise will be available to give guidance and individual tuition. You will be given the opportunity to examine some of her sketchbooks and then you will use your own sketchbooks as reference and as a source of ideas for your own painting. On the second day there will be a group critique of everyone’s work.

Portrait Painting St Johns

Also on offer is our Portrait Painting Masterclass led by artist Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters – a 2 day course in the greater St Johns area. On this course, students will get to know the artist and his work, as well as the philosophy behind his work. The first day will start with a demonstration by Tim then you will proceed to create small, quick oil sketches which concentrate on form, tone and colour, rather than detail. On the second day students will create a large painting, again without adding detail. Throughout this process, students’ work will be discussed and their individual choices will be scrutinized to identify how to create tension and interest in the composition. The course will conclude with a one on one assessment of the student’s work.
