Whether you are a beginner or a professional artist, we have an art course designed just for you. If you have just started painting, are starting a new hobby or are thinking of developing your established painting practice, our tutors will work with you at your level. We aim to cap the capacity of our Beginner art classes at 10 or 12 so we can guarantee the classes are small and intimate, which allows our students to enjoy individual attention from the tutors. Our Beginner art lessons involve both individual and group work. You will be able to share ideas with other students and focus on your individual needs with one to one time with your tutor.

Advanced Art Classes Thorncombe Street

For those professional artists who are looking to gain more experience or depth or concentrate on the art they have already produced, our Advanced art courses are just what you are looking for. Our team of tutors are practising artists and will be available to provide an insight into the current industry and provide technical support to the students. On an Advanced art course you will be in a class of like minded artists, who have the same goal – to develop and define their own practice and challenge their existing skills and knowledge. Taking an art course shouldn’t be at the expense of your working life and other responsibilities, so our timetables have been designed especially to fit into your busy schedule.

Landscape Painting Courses Thorncombe Street

Artist Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club, presents a 2 day workshop in the greater Thorncombe Street area on Landscape Painting. On this course you will find out more about Louise’s work and her painting style. The emphasis will be on acquiring the skills of working quickly, freely and dynamically. Weather permitting, students can choose to work outside, working with pencil and watercolour and working on simplification and abstraction before painting in the studio. These two days provide the perfect opportunity for students to create a few paintings, as Louise will be available to give guidance and individual tuition. Some of her sketchbooks will be available to look at and your own sketchbooks will be used as reference and inspiration to inform your painting. The second day will provide an opportunity for the group to critique each other’s work.

Portrait Painting Thorncombe Street

We also offer our Portrait Painting Masterclass in the greater Thorncombe Street area, a 2 day course led by artist Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. The students will be introduced to the artist on this course, as well as his work and the philosophy behind his work. Tim will start the first day with a demonstration, after which you will go on to make small, quick oil sketches, concentrating not on detail but on form, tone and colour. On the second day students will create a large painting, again without adding detail. Throughout this process, students’ work will be discussed and their individual choices will be scrutinized to identify how to create tension and interest in the composition. The course finishes with a one on one critique of the work the student has produced.
