Our Beginner art classes are intentionally kept small and intimate by aiming to cap the class sizes at 10 or 12 to allow you to receive all the direction you need from your tutor. Weather permitting, students can choose to work outside, working with pencil and watercolour and working on simplification and abstraction before painting in the studio. While Louise is available during these two days to give advice and one on one tuition, we encourage students to make several paintings.Students can look at some of Louise’s sketchbooks while their own sketchbooks will be used as reference and for inspiration. The second day will provide an opportunity for the group to critique each other’s work.
Portrait Painting Well Hall
Also on offer is our Portrait Painting Masterclass led by artist Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters – a 2 day course in the greater Well Hall area. This course will introduce students to the artist as they get to know his work and the philosophy behind it. On the first day, after a demonstration by Tim, you will proceed to create small, quick oil sketches which focus more on tone, colour and form than detail. On the second day students will produce a large painting, again resisting the urge to add detail. Throughout this process, students’ work will be discussed and their individual choices will be scrutinized to identify how to create tension and interest in the composition. The student’s work will be assessed on a one to one basis at the end of the course.
