Beginners Art Classes West-Harting

Our art courses cater for a range of abilities – from beginner to professional artists. If you have just started painting, are starting a new hobby or are thinking of developing your established painting practice, our tutors will work with you at your level. We aim to cap the capacity of our Beginner art classes at 10 or 12 so we can guarantee the classes are small and intimate, which allows our students to enjoy individual attention from the tutors. Our Beginner art lessons incorporate individual and group work. You will be given the chance to both to discuss your specific needs one on one with your tutor and to share ideas with other students.

Advanced Art Classes West-Harting

Our Advanced art courses in the greater West-Harting area are ideal for professional artists who are looking for more experience, depth or focus on the work they already create. As practising artists, all of our tutors can give technical support and provide insight into the industry as it stands at the moment. On an Advanced art course you will be in a class of like-minded artists, who have the same goal – to develop and define their own practice and challenge their existing skills and knowledge. We realise that as working professionals it can be hard to juggle your responsibilities and taking part in a course, so we have timetables which can accommodate your busy schedule.

Fine Art Courses West-Harting

For a more general overview of fine art, the New School of Art offers a Fine Art course in the greater West-Harting area. The tutors will help students focus and critically reflect on their work and painting by providing an introduction to fine art practice, including drawing and painting. As it is led by professional artists, this programme gives students the opportunity of benefitting from class discussions, workshops and one to one tutorials. During the course, students will develop their skills and gain insight into the way their course tutor works.

Life Drawing Classes West-Harting

Another class we offer in the greater West-Harting area are the Life Drawing classes, which are proving to be a popular choice. We believe rigorous study in drawing is essential to all figurative work, and underpins our philosophy as an Art school. The class entails drawing the life model in a range of different poses. The Life Drawing classes are a chance for artists to explore their creative side and develop their draftmanship in a supportive setting. Tutors will be there to give instruction and guidance. No matter what your level of ability is, this programme will develop your skills. This class not only provides tuition and direction, but it is a good opportunity to focus on drawing in a more social setting.

Landscape Painting Courses West-Harting

Louise Balaam NEAC, member of the New English Art Club, runs our 2-day Landscape Painting workshops in the greater West-Harting area. On this course you will find out more about Louise’s work and her painting style. You will concentrate on learning to work dynamically, quickly and freely. Weather permitting, students can choose to work outside, working with pencil and watercolour and working on simplification and abstraction before painting in the studio. Students will be encouraged to make several paintings over both days and Louise will be on hand to provide advice and individual tuition. Some of her sketchbooks will be available to look at and your own sketchbooks will be used as reference and inspiration to inform your painting. On the second day there will be a group critique of everyone’s work.

Portrait Painting West-Harting

Another course on offer is our Portrait Painting Masterclass, which is a 2-day course in the greater West-Harting area led by Tim Benson VPROI, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. The students will be introduced to the artist on this course, as well as his work and the philosophy behind his work. Tim will start the first day with a demonstration, after which you will go on to make small, quick oil sketches, concentrating not on detail but on form, tone and colour. On the second day students will create a large painting, again without adding detail. In order to identify ways in which to create interest and tension in the work, students’ work will be discussed and their choices examined throughout this process. At the end of the course, the student’s work will be individually critiqued.
