About The Course

2 Days | 7th & 8th May 2026 | OILS

‘The tuition was excellent, with lots of new ways of looking and approaches to painting. I learnt a lot which I can use in my own practice’ – Caroline Smith

The course will be an exciting opportunity to be tutored by a New English Art Club member and a highly inspirational artist. To start Louise will introduce her work, and outline her way of working. Throughout the course there will be a focus on learning to loosen up, and the importance of working quickly and directly. Students will draw and create studies using oil on paper, concentrating on simplifying impressions and identifying the main visual ideas. We will then begin to work on a painting, or maybe more than one.

Some of Louise’s own work and sketchbooks, together with information about other relevant artists, will be available as reference and from which to draw inspiration and knowledge.

An intimate course with a maximum of 8 students, so each paitnter will get a good amount of one to one tuition and attention during the two days.

About The Tutor

Louise Balaam NEAC / RWA – Head of Painting

Louise Balaam is an abstract landscape painter who trained at Kent Institute of Art and Design, Canterbury, (BA) and at Christchurch University College in Canterbury (MA). Her work is inspired by an emotional response to the natural world, in particular to the quality of light. Her process is to draw outside and then paint in the studio, aiming for a direct and intuitive response to the experience of being in the landscape. The aim is to somehow convey the experience of being there, the weather, sounds, smells and the process of walking through the landscape, as much as what can be seen. In the studio, she uses the drawings to help focus her memory, but doesn't work directly from them – she finds it works better to put the source material aside and to paint intuitively, so that the painting becomes an entity in its own right which starts to make its own demands in a sense, it begins to answer back.

Louise sees her work as relating to the English landscape tradition - Turner and Constable are both big influences, especially Constable's sketches, and modern British artists such as Peter Lanyon and Joan Eardley are also important to her. She draws outside and then paints in the studio, aiming for a direct and intuitive response to the experience of being in the landscape. She was elected a member of the New English Art Club and of the Royal West of England Academy in 2011, and lives and works in Kent.
